Elected to the Phoenix City Council in 2007, and currently serving as a councilman, Michael Nowakowski, a life-long resident of Phoenix is also the vice president of the communications fund for Radio Campesina. Radio Campesina, a nine-station network is made up of the most popular nonprofit educational-format Spanish-language radio stations across the Western United States. Nowakowski oversees daily operations of the Radio Campesina Network and is responsible for network expansion and success. Throughout his professional career, Nowakowski, served as a general manager for nearly 10 years of the Phoenix (KNAI) station, which is the largest market in the country for Radio Campesina. Prior to joining the Campesina family, Nowakowski was an assistant director of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. Michael has spent his life working to make a difference and build community.
Maria Barquin

The country’s first woman programming director for a Spanish-language radio network, Maria Barquin is a native of Mexicali, Mexico who moved to Phoenix at the age of 14. She earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting business management from the Walter Cronkite School of Telecommunications at Arizona State University. A 14-year-veteran of Radio Campesina, Barquin helped create a cutting-edge third option radio format, combining educational and musical components to attract and maintain a large and loyal audience. Using Radio Campesina programming, she has helped execute numerous large-scale charity drives and educational events. Moreover, as the programing director for the network, Barquin strives to maintain Radio Campesina involved in civic and lobbying activities that benefit the community, as well as coordinate health fairs, activities with local schools and community groups.
Bill Barquin

A nine-year veteran of Radio Campesina, Bill Barquin began working at Radio Campesina as an account executive and sales manager for the network’s highly successful KNAI Phoenix station for more than five years, before becoming the radio network’s chief operating officer (COO) in 2009. As the network COO, Barquin oversees management and staff coordination of programming, engineering, satellite, IT, administration activities and all local stations under the Radio Campesina Network. Born in Morenci, Arizona, Barquin received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Grand Canyon University. Throughout Barquin’s career, he has served as a senior events coordinator for five years at the Arvizu Advertising agency. Barquin’s dedication to community involvement includes service in a host of city, business, charitable and school activities, ranging from being on the board of managers of the Valley of the Sun YMCA to the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce board of directors. He has been recognized as a recipient of the “40 Under 40 Hispanic Leaders in Arizona” award.
